Research

We’re here to make a real difference in the lives of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – both in Northern Ireland and around the world.

Our mission is to drive groundbreaking research and lead innovative clinical trials that bring science from the lab directly to the people who need it most.

At the heart of everything we do is collaboration – between scientists, doctors, the MS community and other stakeholders. We’re also passionate about nurturing the next generation of diverse researchers to ensure lasting progress.

Our vision is to lay the foundation for a world-class MS Centre of Excellence in Northern Ireland

History

The NI MS hub builds on work of the Northern Ireland Multiple Sclerosis Research Network (NIMSRN) which was founded in 2015 by scientist Prof Denise Fitzgerald and consultant neurologist Dr Gavin McDonnell.

The NIMSRN provided a structure through which clinicians in the Belfast Trust, and scientists in Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) could collaborate to develop research capacity and deliver research programmes and clinical trials in MS.

This network was greatly supported by the late Prof Dame Ingrid Allen, a clinician-scientist who was globally-renowned for her research in MS. Ingrid passed away in 2020, yet her influence continues to support our work through a legacy gift that underpins the formation of our NI MS Hub.
